A 10-year-old Polk County boy is in critical condition after an apparent accidental shooting in which his brother struck him in the head with a BB gun at close range.

Detectives say Skyler Richardson, of Frostproof, and his older brother Taylor, 13, were outside the family’s home shooting at targets Wednesday about 7 p.m. when Taylor pointed the gun at Skyler and shot him in the head.

Taylor Richardson alerted his mother, Heather Richardson, 34, who then called for help.

Deputies say Heather Richardson was preparing dinner at the time of the shooting, and her boyfriend, Gary Brown, also was inside the house.

Skylor Richardson was airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The shooting appeared to be accidental, deputies say. An investigation is ongoing.
