Winter Haven police are asking for the public’s help to find whoever threw a 4-month-old Rottweiler puppy in a dumpster on Thanksgiving, which led to the animal’s death.

Police were called about 10:20 p.m. Thursday to the Royal Inn, 3525 Lake Alfred Road NW, after the puppy being found in the dumpster behind the motel.

The person who found the animal, Joshua Wanie, said he was out walking his dog when it began pulling him toward the dumpster and acting erratically. Wanie said he approached the dumpster and heard faint whimpering from inside.

Wanie searched the dumpster and found the puppy tightly wrapped in three plastic bags. He said when he removed the bags the puppy began gasping for air, then began vomiting and was unable to use his front legs.

Polk County Animal Control was contacted and took the puppy, which died shortly after arriving at their facility.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Winter Haven Police Department at (863) 401-2256.
