A Winter Haven police officer was arrested Friday for domestic violence after a verbal altercation with his girlfriend turned physical, Auburndale police said.

About 3:15 p.m., officers were called to the home where Allen Shane Ditty, 42, lives with his girlfriend. During a verbal argument, Ditty pushed his girlfriend's hand away when she pointed her finger in his face, police said.

During the argument, both parties struck each other, resulting in each one receiving minor scratches, police said. Ditty was found to be the primary aggressor, officers said, and was charged with domestic battery.

Winter Haven Chief of Police Gary Hester said Ditty has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal affairs investigation.
