Winter Haven homeowner fatally shoots burglar, police say

A Winter Haven homeowner shot and killed a burglar Monday morning who was charging at him despite a warning shot, police said.

When officers arrived just before 7 a.m., they found Mitchell Large, 40, dead inside the home at 4219 Lake Marianna Drive, police said.

Large, whose last known address was 2526 Highway 92, was shot at least once in the torso.

According to police, homeowner Luis F. Pena, 54, heard a noise and found Large was rattling the French doors leading to a back porch area.

Police say Pena retrieved a gun and fired a shot in an attempt to scare the burglar, who then continued into the house.

Pena and the other residents — his wife, 53-year-old Bacenbina A. Pena, and 27-year-old son Luis A. Pena — were armed and in the kitchen, when additional shots were fired, with one hitting the burglar at least once, police say.

An investigation continues, police say.
