Two plead guilty in fatal Hernando County home invasion

BROOKSVILLE – Two Tampa Bay area men face up to 25 years each in prison for their part in a fatal home invasion.

As part of a deal with Hernando County prosecutors, 22-year-old Nicholas James Trammell and 26-year-old Richard Denard Harris pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder. They had been facing first-degree murder charges.

Authorities say Trammell, Harris and 25-year-old Robert Willoughby entered Michael Pfeifer’s home one night in August 2011 and demanded money and drugs. Pfeifer was shot in the knees and died before rescuers arrived.

Prosecutors say Trammell carried a 12-gauge shotgun, and Harris had an AK-47. Both were used to shoot Pfeifer. Willoughby reportedly carried a handgun but didn’t fire.

Willoughby was sentenced in December to 10 years in prison after reaching a deal with prosecutors.
