Troopers locate driver of rig that clipped I-275 overpass

Published:

The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling an excavator was located by troopers Friday, three days after his rig clipped an overpass, dropping debris onto Interstate 275.

Patrick Bruce Mulvihill, 57, of Hudson will be cited for transporting a load with a height violation, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Information from witnesses helped troopers track down the 1984 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, operated by Crockett’s Tower, of Land O’ Lakes, the patrol said.

Troopers said Mulvihill was heading south in the outside lane of I-275, toward the Howard Frankland Bridge, about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, when the excavator struck the Kennedy Boulevard overpass.

The driver continued driving onto the bridge, although the crash caused concrete to fall on the southbound lanes of I-275, troopers said.

Elizabeth McLaughlin, 56, of Tampa, driving behind the tractor-trailer, was not hurt but the undercarriage of her 2011 Mazda CX-7 was severely damaged from the debris in the roadway, troopers said.

The highway patrol determined the overpass sustained about $7,000 in damage. The excavator sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage, troopers said.
