Toddler drowns in Lakeland pool

Published:

Lakeland police are investigating after an 11-month-old boy died Friday night after falling into a Lakeland pool.

Police were called at 7:14 p.m. to 4722 Puritan Road after the boy fell into the pool after being left unattended and exiting through an open door.

Police said at least four adults were present at the time. The mother, Samantha Holt, 17, was in a different part of the house. The father, Brandon Paul, 18, was supposed to be supervising the boy, police said.

Paul was playing billiards with a friend in the same room as the boy and had left the child with the friend to find a child-proof gate. When he returned, Paul could not find the child, and during his search he found the boy in the pool, police said.

Paul and his friend attempted CPR and called for help. The boy was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 8:15 p.m.

The investigation is continuing, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of death.
