A family dog bit an 18-month-old boy Friday night in the face, leaving the child with facial wounds, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Gabriel Maurice was transported to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg in stable condition. Pinellas County Animal Control took custody of the dog, an 11-year-old female mixed-breed Husky named Kody, and will determine the disposition of the dog, police said.

The dog has been a longtime family pet that hasn’t been aggressive to the child, police said.

The family, who is from Massachusetts, was staying at the Extended Stay America Hotel, 2311 Ulmerton Road, St. Petersburg, when the dog attacked the boy at around 6:50 p.m. There were no other children in the hotel room at the time the dog attacked the boy, police said.

The family is staying at the hotel while buying a home in the area, police said.

St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and St. Petersburg Police Department responded to the scene.
