Tampa police have arrested three people in the robbery and shooting of a man at a Howard Johnson motel Wednesday night.
Chad Barnett, 23, Chance Estrada, 19, and James Stewart, 64, all of Tampa, face charges of attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery.
Estrada, who told deputies she was a self-employed model, additionally was charged on a warrant accusing her of driving while her license was suspended or revoked. She and Barnett were arrested just after midnight outside Stewart’s home, police said.
Stewart was found at St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound. Police said he told them he was shot in an unrelated incident.
Estrada and Barnett remained jailed Thursday morning. Bail had not been set.
Police said the robbery and shooting occurred at 7:40 p.m. at the motel, 2055 N. Dale Mabry Highway.
The robbers were armed with handguns, police said, but the victim scuffled with them and ended up being shot in the wrist. As he ran from the scene, the robbers shot at him and sped off in a vehicle, police said.
The victim, who had not yet been identified, ran from the scene and collapsed outside a nearby restaurant. The victim was hospitalized and treated for the gunshot and wounds to his face, police said.
Police believed one of the robbers lived nearby and searched areas close to the motel. They found the vehicle that matched the description of the getaway car parked in front of Stewart’s home. Estrada was asleep inside the car and Barnett was on the front porch trying to hide a handgun stolen from the victim during the robbery, police said.
