A federal judge sentenced a Tampa man to 18 months in prison for stealing more than $78,000 in a tax fraud case.
As part of his sentence, Rodney Andre McCray, 31, was also ordered to pay $78,728 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and entered a money judgment of $3,500, according to Middle District of Florida Acting U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III.
According to court documents, during the summer of 2012, McCray and another person began a scheme where McCray then opened a Bank of America bank account to receive fraudulent income tax return deposits. Fraudulent returns were filed with the IRS, and the refunds were placed in McCray’s account. About 15 refunds were acquired this way, according to Bentley
McCray pleaded guilty on Oct. 8.
