A Tampa man was arrested early this morning for shooting at a Tampa Police Helicopter while it was out on patrol, police said.

Thomas Henry Hearld, 56, of 10921 N. Nebraska Ave., Lot No. 17, shot at the helicopter three times with a shotgun as it flew overhead on a routine patrol around 3:13 a.m., police said.

The helicopter was not hit by the gunfire and those onboard, Tampa Police pilot Mark McCann and observer Chris Shepherd, were not injured.

Responding officers recovered a shotgun and Hearld was arrested and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail without incident, police said.

Heard is charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and shooting at an aircraft.
