A man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his roommate after a prostitute was able to provide testimony about the crime, Hillsborough County deputies said tonight.
According to detectives, on Feb. 24, deputies went to Montierra Apartments, 11415 Delores Court, after receiving a 911 call from Lupelle Gomez, 30, who lived in Apt. A15, reporting a woman had stolen money. Witnesses saw the woman leave the apartment while Gomez and his roommate, and Moises Alvarez-Hernandez, 50, were on the phone.
Once the deputies arrived, Gomez answered the door and told deputies that everything was OK and the woman had left. Deputies then tried to enter the apartment to check on the welfare of the occupants, but Gomez tried to keep them out. Deputies then found Alvarez-Hernandez on the floor suffering from stab wounds. Deputies said they had to restrain Gomez from interfering with attempts to aid the victim, who was transported to the hospital where he died.
During the course of the investigation deputies determined the woman who Gomez can contacted 911 about was a prostitute he had hired. After locating and interviewing her, they were able to determine that during the time period she was leaving the apartment complex, both the victim and the suspect were still on the phone with 911.
Forensic evidence from Alvarez-Hernandez was found on Gomez, detectives said.
Today, Gomez, who has been in the Orient Road Jail since Feb. 24 on a charge of obstructing or opposing an officer without violence, was charged with second-degree murder.
