Tampa driver killed when car smashes into tree

A 21-year-old Tampa driver died after his vehicle slammed into a tree Thursday evening in Mango, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to deputies, at 6:40 p.m., James B. Aikman, 8825 Causeway Blvd., was traveling north on River International Drive between Broadway Avenue and Williams Road in a 1997 Acura Integra. Travelling at 70 mph, he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, drove left of center, left the roadway and struck a tree with the driver’s side, deputies said.

Aikman was pronounced dead at the scene. Passenger Michael A. Brandt, 27, of Seffner was taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, deputies said.
