An inmate being held on a warrant out of Polk County escaped today from the Orient Road Jail by following another person out of the jail. He has since been recaptured.

Jeffery Stafford, 45, of no know address, is wanted in Polk County on a reckless driving warrant, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He now also faces an escape charge.

About 8:45 a.m., Stafford was being prepared for transfer to Polk when he entered a vestibule with another person who was being legitimately released, the sheriff’s office said. Stafford left with the other person and fled through the lobby.

Stafford was recaptured after he was seen walking near the Hess gas station at North 50th Street and East Adamo Drive in Tampa, the sheriff’s office said. He was returned to the Orient Road Jail.

The sheriff’s office is reviewing the case to determine how Stafford got out and if any procedures were violated.
