Suspect in phone theft sought after app takes his photo

Deputies are looking for a man who stole a cellphone from a car at a Riverview gas station last month and had his photo automatically taken by the phone’s “Lookout” app.

About 5 p.m. May 23, a person was pumping gas at the Texaco at 7710 Causeway Blvd. When the customer went inside to pay for the gas, someone entered his vehicle and took his Samsung 4 phone, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The suspect attempted to gain access to the phone by entering a password, deputies said. After three failed attempts, the “Lookout” app snapped a photo and automatically emailed the images to the phone’s owner.

The sheriff’s office released two of the images, showing a bald man with a thin build.

Anyone with information was asked to call the sheriff’s office at (813) 247-8200. To be eligible for a cash reward and remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477), go to www.crimestopperstb.com or text “CSTB” plus the tip to CRIMES (274637).
