A man wanted for the Christmas 2011 deaths of two passengers in his vehicle was arrested in Uruguay and was extradited to Pinellas County, the Largo Police Department said.
Diego Cavalieri, 24, was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injuries, police said.
Officers with the U.S. Marshal’s Office returned to Florida from Uruguay with Cavalieri on Friday. He is being held at the Pinellas County Jail.
Cavalieri was driving a 2007 Ford Fusion southbound on Indian Rocks Road at nearly 70 mph in a 35 mph zone.
Cavalieri lost control of his car and crossed the road in front of a 2000 Buick Century driven by David Maynard.
Thomas Williams, 25, who was in the passenger seat of Cavalieri’s car, died on impact. Sean Wilson, 22, who was in the back seat, was transported to Bayfront Medical Center and later died. Passenger Timothy Talbot, survived the crash. Maynard, who drove the Buick, was injured in the crash.
Cavalieri was driving under the influence of alcohol and THC. He was driving at 69 mph in the 35 mph zone.
Shortly after the crash, he left for Uruguay.
