St. Pete girl, 11, dies after riding scooter into truck

An 11-year-old St. Petersburg girl died late Friday night after being struck by a pickup truck, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Sonia Savage, who turned 11 on Wednesday, was transported to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg after the crash in the 5800 block of 1st Street North. She was pronounced dead at 11:47 p.m., police said.

Sonia was riding a scooter at around 6 p.m. According to police, when she began to cross 1st Street North, she rode into the driver’s side of a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Daniel Tripp, 54, of St. Petersburg.

Sonia was run over by the pickup truck’s left rear wheel, police said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, police said.

At this time, there are no pending charges, police said.
