A 14-year-old Spring Hill bicyclist remains in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Monday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

William Machacek of Spring Hill was transported by emergency helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

At around 6:15 p.m. Machacek was heading south on the east shoulder of U.S. Highway 41 just south of Painter Place, FHP said.

Machacek was struck by a 1998 Ford Expedition driven by Nathan Wayne Young, 52, of Wesley Chapel, which was headed north on U.S. 41. After the crash, Young drove away without rendering assistance to Machacek, FHP said.

Later, a Pasco County sheriff's deputy spotted Young and pursued his vehicle. After a brief pursuit, Young was arrested for fleeing and eluding, FHP said.

The crash remains under investigation and charges against Young involving the crash are pending, FHP said.
