Sheriff’s sweep targets gangs in east Hillsborough


More than a dozen arrests were made last week during a sweep targeting gang strongholds in east and northeast Hillsborough County, the sheriff’s office said.

From Jan. 27 through Sunday, uniformed and nonuniformed deputies conducted warrant pickups, probation checks and curfew compliance checks while providing an increased presence in known gang areas, the sheriff’s office said.

“By targeting known gang members and known gang areas, law enforcement can better ensure a safe and secure environment for citizens of Hillsborough County,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nunez said in a news release.

Seized items during the operation included gang and drug paraphernalia, ammunition, 14.2 grams of cannabis and 0.2 grams of methamphetamine, the news release said.

Four members of the Sur 13 gang were taken into custody, plus suspects associated with Dover Loco, Bloods, CMC (Clair Mel City) and Gangsta Killa’s, the sheriff’s offices said. Charges ranged from probation violations to drug possession, grand theft and burglary.

According to deputies, those with gang ties included:

David Ibarra, 19, of Dover, violation of probation/possession of cannabis (warrant).

Marcus Tomlinson, 21, of Seffner, violation of probation/burglary and grand theft.

Ramiro Silva, 22, of Plant City, violation of probation/burglary and grand theft auto.

Luis Salvador-Cruz, 22, of Dover, violation of probation/burglary and weapons.

Christian Delgado, 24, possession of cannabis.

Wayne Smith, 24, of Tampa, possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, violation of probation/fleeing to elude.

Keon Moore, 22, of Tampa, possession of cannabis, failure to appear (possession of controlled substance and cannabis, warrant).

Kenio Senete, 18, of Tampa, obstructing an officer (warrant).

Other arrests included:

Matthew Blake Mathis, 22, of Plant City, burglary and grand theft (warrant).

Luis Lamas, 26, of Plant City, burglary and grand theft (warrant).

Jose Luque, 36, of Tampa, violation of probation/grand theft (out-of-county warrant).

Eric Wenczel, 26, of Plant City, possession of controlled substances.

Christopher Burgess, 34, of Tampa, failure to redeliver leased vehicle (warrant).
