Sheriff: Tampa woman stole 224 checks at cardiology office

A Tampa woman is jailed today on charges she changed the payee section on hundreds of checks made out to a cardiology practice to her name, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Kenia Elena Exposita, 50, of 7612 Swoope St. S., Tampa, was arrested today at home, charged with 224 counts of uttering a forged instrument and taken to Orient Road Jail. She is being held on $450,000 bond.

Detectives found that from Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, 2012, Exposita stole 224 checks that were made payable to Brandon Cardiology, 320 Oakfield Drive in Brandon, where she worked as an office assistant.

The company reported the theft on Feb.14, after its 2012 audit.

The sheriff’s office said that Exposita would either change the name of the payee to her name, or tell patients to leave the “Pay To” section blank on the checks because she had a stamp. She later deposited the checks into her personal account.
