Sheriff: Infant hospitalized after abuse by St. Pete man

A St. Petersburg man has been charged in an abuse incident that left a 2-month-old boy hospitalized with a lacerated stomach and other injuries.

Nathaniel Zemola, 24, of 4503 80th St. N., Apt. 1, St. Petersburg, was arrested Saturday and is charged with aggravated child abuse.

The boy was being watched by Zemola in a St. Petersburg home, when the boy’s mother returned from work and noticed the injuries, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. The child was suffering from a lacerated stomach, broken rib, bruising and a laceration behind his right ear.

Zemola denied involvement Monday when during an interview with detectives, the sheriff’s office said. He was then arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

The boy child remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.
