Selfies are usually fun and frivolous, but now one has landed a man behind bars on burglary charges.

On May 23, a man was pumping gas at a Texaco gas station, 7710 Causeway Blvd., Riverview, and while he was inside, his Samsung 4 cell phone was taken from his vehicle, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

The thief attempted to gain access to the phone by entering a password, but after three failed attempts, an app called “Lookout”

snapped a photo of the suspect and marked the phone’s location in the vicinity of 4620 Bristol Bay Way in Tampa, deputies said. The photo of the suspect and the GPS coordinates were then forwarded by email to the victim.

Detectives said they spoke with personnel at the Bristol Bay apartment complex and learned the apartment number of Edgar Hernandez-Santos., 38, who admitted to taking the phone and identified himself as the man in the photo.

The undamaged phone was returned to the victim. Hernandez-Santos was arrested on charges of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle and grand theft and taken to Orient Road Jail.
