A gunman is dead today after opening fire on neighboring homes and Highlands County deputies in Sebring.

About 4:45 a.m., deputies were called to the neighborhood of 215 Plantation Road in Sebring in response to shots being fired at homes, according to the sheriff’s office.

Residents said bullets were hitting their houses and deputies came under fire from a high-powered assault rifle as they arrived at the scene. Deputies took cover behind patrol cars and houses, and tried to see the gunman through heavy fog, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s patrol cars were hit by numerous bullets.

Lights from patrol cars were able to illuminate the gunman, who was ordered to drop the weapon, the sheriff’s office said. When he did not, the supervisor on scene shot the suspect dead.
