A pregnant woman is clinging to life after accidentally being shot in the head Saturday evening, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 6:43 p.m., deputies and Fire Rescue units were sent to 20079 Suncrest Drive in Brooksville, where Kathleen and Carson Hoover of Citrus County were visiting William DeHayes and family.

According to deputies, DeHayes was showing the Hoovers some of his guns, including a .22 caliber revolver. While showing the revolver, it discharged, striking Kathleen Hoover in the head, deputies said.

Hoover, who is five months pregnant, was transported to Bayfront Health Brookville, then airlifted to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. Her injuries are considered life threatening.

The investigation is continuing, deputies said.
