BARTOW – A central Florida woman has been sentenced to life in prison for killing her husband and burying his body in a backyard herb garden.

A Polk County judge sentenced 66-year-old Barbara Scott on Thursday after a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Benny Scott went missing in early 2012, around the same time Barbara Scott began selling his belongings at garage sales. The Ledger reports that Barbara Scott finally revealed where her husband was buried after being confronted by her daughter in March that year.

Barbara Scott’s attorneys argued that her husband shot himself with a .22-caliber revolver, and she buried him because she couldn’t cope with the grief.

The medical examiner testified that the gunshot wound – slightly behind the Benny Scott’s left ear – was in an unusual place for a right-handed person to commit suicide.
