A driver of a Mercedes Benz died Thursday afternoon after crashing with a semi-tractor trailer in Lake Wales, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Mercedes Benz became engulfed in flames. The killed driver was an adult, but has not been identified, the sheriff’s office said.

The Mercedes Benz was heading west on State Road 60 East between 630 East and Grape Hammock Road in Lake Wales. The driver of the semi-tractor trailer, who wasn’t injured, was heading west.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lane, the sheriff’s office said.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, the sheriff’s office said.

There were no other passengers in the Mercedes Benz.

Both directions of Highway 60 remain closed from Highway 630 to County Line Road as deputies investigate.

The case remains under investigation.
