Police: St. Pete woman accidentally kills boyfriend with gun

A 20-year-old St. Petersburg woman was arrested Wednesday night for accidentally shooting her boyfriend to death, the St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Mandy Avis was charged with manslaughter for fatally shooting her boyfriend, Michael Ward, 23, of St. Petersburg, police said.

Just after 6 p.m., Avis picked up a gun and, thinking it was not loaded, pointed the gun at Ward and pulled the trigger, police said.

The gun went off and a bullet struck Ward in the chest. He was transported to Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg where he died, police said.

The shooting occurred at 1945 2nd Ave. North, St. Petersburg. where the couple lived.
