Police: Mistaken identity as Polk mom fatally shoots daughter

A Winter Haven woman was charged with second-degree murder today after police say she mistakenly shot her daughter outside her apartment following an argument with her boyfriend.

Adele Bing, 52, also faces a child abuse charge after police say her daughter was holding a 4-month-old baby as she was shot Monday night around 8:45 p.m.

According to police, Adele Bing had just had a heated argument with her boyfriend, 39-year-old James Lee, at her residence at 481 18th Street SE shortly before the shooting.

Lee was hospitalized for treatment after police say Adele Bing struck him in the head with a gun.

While he was being treated, police say Ruby Bing knocked on her mother’s door while holding the baby.

Still upset over the argument, police say Adele Bing mistook her daughter for Lee.

Armed with a baseball bat and handgun, police say Adele Bing shot her daughter in the chest as she opened the door.

Ruby Bing died at the scene, and the baby was unharmed, police say.

Adele Bing was being held at the Polk County jail. It wasn’t clear if Bing had an attorney.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
