A 10th-grader at Middleton High School faces a weapons charge Tuesday after he showed a gun to a classmate, and the classmate’s father notified police, according to Tampa police.

Eric Fipps, 16, 3801 N. 30th St., Tampa, has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon at the school, 4801 N. 22nd St., police said. The charge is a felony.

Fipps, who said he needed the gun for protection in his neighborhood, showed the gun to a classmate who then texted his father, police said. The father then contacted the school and school resource officer.

A Middleton resource officer removed Fipps from class and found the gun in his book bag, police said. Fipps said he had found the gun, but detectives are investigating that claim.

Police said Fipps will be transported to the juvenile assessment center.
