Plant City woman dies, children hurt in Polk crash

Published:

A Plant City woman died on Wednesday afternoon when she crashed into a tractor-trailer in Polk County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Helen Abram Lamar, 73, died in the 4 p.m. crash on U.S. Highway 92, FHP said.

Lamar was heading east on Highway 92 just west of Hibiscus Parkway when for unknown reasons she crossed over the center line and into the westbound lanes, FHP said.

Lamar, who was driving a 2000 Ford Windstar, was heading directly to a tractor-trailer driven by William Chesson Jr., 51, of Falls City Neb.

Chesson turned the tractor-trailer to avoid hitting Lamar’s van head on, but Lamar’s vehicle struck the left side of the tractor-trailer, FHP said.

Lamar, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene of the crash. Her two adopted children, who are 7 and 8 years old, were in the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, FHP said.

Alcohol wasn’t a factor in the crash, FHP said.

There will be no charges, FHP said.
