TAMPA – A Plant City man was sentenced today to 10 years in prison for running over an 80-year-old man and leaving him to die last fall.

A judge also ordered 30-year-old Ryan S. Pottinger to spend 10 years on probation once he’s released from prison.

About 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30, Hillsborough County deputies say Santiago Sanchez-Lopez was walking east across Sydney Dover Road when he was struck by Pottinger, who was driving about 50 mph southbound in a Ford Ranger pickup. Sanchez-Lopez was crossing the road in front of his home.

Pottinger left the scene and was arrested a few days later after deputies received tips from the public.

According to a published report, Pottinger faced 30 years in prison. He was also charged with driving with a revoked license.

The plea deal stipulates that Pottinger will not be allowed to drive once he’s on probation. He’ll be required to complete 100 hours of community service.
