Palmetto woman charged with leaving baby in front of home

Published:

A Palmetto woman was arrested after intentionally leaving her child in front of a Manatee County home Sunday afternoon, according the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.

About 3:20 p.m., Erin Carnes, 27, 1520 10th Avenue East, dropped off her 1-year-old boy by a mailbox in front of a home at 1624 17th Street East in Palmetto, according to a Manatee Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

Carnes returned to that same location a short time later and dropped off bags of the child’s belongings, the report said.

The child was left at that location because Carnes believed the father of the child lived at that location, deputies said.

The woman who lives at the address told deputies she did not give Carnes permission to leave the baby there, nor did Carnes personally hand over the baby to the home’s resident.

At some point, Carnes was involved in a wreck on the Green Bridge and as members of the Palmetto Police Department responded, she threatened to jump from the bridge.

After Carnes was taken into custody, they were made aware of the abandoned baby. The child was placed in the custody of Carnes’ grandmother, deputies said.

Carnes remains in custody.
