The eastbound lanes of the Selmon Expressway were closed for more than three hours today when a dump truck overturned trying to avoid a crash.

About 11:39 a.m., John Riley Hilrun, 53, of Tampa, was eastbound in a 1995 Mack dump truck carrying a load of dirt on the Selmon near 22nd Street, when the vehicle ahead of him stopped suddenly, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Hilrun tried to avoid the vehicle by swerving to the left, but lost control and the truck overturned, striking the concrete barrier wall, FHP said.

The accident closed both eastbound lanes of the Selmon for more than three hours, according to FHP.

Hilrun suffered minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa. His passenger, Ferenanda Faustino, 29, of Mulberry, was seriously injured and taken to Tampa General Hospital.
