Motorcyclist dies in Winter Haven collision, deputies say

A motorcyclist is dead after a collision this afternoon in Winter Haven, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to deputies, about 3:44 p.m. a 2007 Chrysler minivan driven by Frederick Gengler, 72, of Winter Haven was westbound on Cypress Gardens Boulevard just east of Lake Bess Road. Meanwhile, two motorcycles were headed east on Cypress Gardens.

Gengler attempted to turn left onto Lake Bess Road in front of the motorcycle riders, who attempted to avoid a collision, deputies said. Robert Marcza, 24, was unable to keep control of his 2002 Suzuki, which slid out from under him, deputies said.

He struck the passenger side of the minivan and died at the scene, deputies said.

Rider Mark Bradley, who was riding a 2004 Honda, was able to avoid a collision but received minor injuries. He was taken by family members to Winter Haven Hospital, where he was treated and released, deputies said.

Gengler was taken to Winter Haven Hospital with minor injuries and was treated and released, deputies said.

The eastbound lanes of Cypress Gardens Boulevard were closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated.
