Man burned in Riverview meth lab explosion, deputies say

One man was badly burned today when a meth lab exploded in Riverview, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials say a man was severely burned at 836 Center Ave. and was flown to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. The man, whose name has not been released, is expected to survive, said sheriff’s spokesman Larry McKinnon.

At 4:09 p.m. a 911 call came in saying an explosion had occurred in a barn at the rear of the residence.

Hillsborough County sheriff’s detectives specially trained to investigate clandestine labs will enter the barn to look for other victims and to verify if the explosion was caused by a meth lab operation.

McKinnon said the meth lab was small, but it still had the potential to create much damage. No neighbors had to be evacuated, however.
