An Oldsmar doctor was charged on several counts Friday after a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation determined the pain management clinic where he worked was operating as an illegal pill mill.

Paul K. Awa, 61, was charged with 14 counts of trafficking in Oxycodone, two counts of delivery of Alprazolam and one count of prescriber practitioner fraud.

The investigation revealed that patients at Main Street Medical in Thonotosassa routinely received prescriptions regardless of their complaints, and after only cursory physical examinations by Awa.

“We have made tremendous strides in curbing prescription drug abuse, and we will remain steadfast in our efforts to shut down every pill mill in Florida,” Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.

Awa was released from the HIllsborough County Jail on Saturday after posting $221,500 bond.
