TAMPA - A Newsome High School teacher was arrested Thursday and charged with 20 counts of possession of child pornography, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

David Valesano Jr., 50, was arrested after detectives with the sheriff's Internet Predator Unit executed a court-authorized search warrant at his home, 729 Fortuna Drive in Brandon. The arrest stemmed from a two-month investigation, the sheriff's office said.

A Hillsborough County School District spokesman said no Newsome students were involved. The sheriff's office said files were found featuring children ranging in age from about 8 to 13 engaged in sexual acts.

Four computers and several digital media items were seized. The sheriff's office said Valesano identified the computer and software that was utilized.

Valesano has taught math at Newsome since 2003, earning $47,600. He has no previous disciplinary problems.

"We have no reason to believe it has anything to do with any of our students," said Stephen Hegarty, spokesman for the school district, adding that Valesano will be suspended with pay until the school board can take up the issue.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement listed no prior arrests for Valesano. He was being held on $150,000 bail Thursday at the Hillsborough County Jail.
