A motorcyclist was killed when he was struck by a pickup this morning on U.S. Highway 27, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a report, about 10:10 a.m., Charles J. Simon, 45, of Clermont was riding a 2005 Honda motorcycle southbound in the inside lane of U.S. 27 near California Boulevard. Meanwhile, Michael P. Donnelly, 30, of St. Cloud, was driving a 2002 Ford F350 pickup and attempting to cross from McFee Drive on the east side of US 27 to California Boulevard on the west side.

Donnelly drove into the path of the motorcycle, which hit the right front bumper of the pickup truck and ended up on the west shoulder of the roadway approximately 100 feet from the point of impact, deputies said.

Simon, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Heart of Florida Hospital, where he died from his injuries at 12:37 p.m., deputies said.

The roadway was closed for about 3 1/2 hours.

The investigation is ongoing.
