A 29-year-old Tampa man was arrested early this Friday, accused of aiming a laser pointer at an overhead police helicopter.

Jeremy Wayne Sumpter, of 709 W. Peninsular St., faces a charge of misuse of a laser lighting device, a third-degree felony. He later was released from jail after posting $2,000 bail.

Tampa police said the crew of a police helicopter on routine patrol near Robles Park three times saw the laser dot on their aircraft between 1 and 2 a.m.

The officers saw where the light was coming from and watched as the man ran inside a home. From the air, the crew directed officers on the ground to the home.

Officers interviewed Sumpter and arrested him after he admitted destroying the pointer when he realized police had located his home.
