A 73-year-old Lakeland man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Wednesday after he was convicted on child pornography charges, the Polk County Sheriff's Office announced today.

Allen Robert Roth, 1994 Scenic View Loop, also was designated a Sexual Offender after being found guilty of 16 counts of possession of child pornography.

Roth was arrested in 2008 during a proactive child pornography investigation after detectives found more than 50 pornographic images and videos of children in his possession. He was released on bail under certain conditions, including no Internet access.

In June 2010, a warrantless search of Roth's residence turned up computers connected to the Internet, which he admitted to using to access pornography, deputies said He was arrested, charged with violation of pretrial conditions and remained in jail through his trial.

"After only 18 minutes of deliberation ... a jury of his peers found this suspect guilty," said Sheriff Grady Judd. "We proactively seek those who would prey on children, including those who view child pornography or those who travel to meet a child for sex. Our message is clear - you will be arrested, you will answer for your crimes, and you will be held accountable."
