A man was arrested Thursday night, a day after being involved in a Lakeland fatal hit-and-run crash, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.
Christopher John McCoy, 40, of Lakeland was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality, the sheriff’s office said.
Detectives found a 2013 red Acura locked in his garage. The car had damage to its front passenger side.
On Wednesday night, a man was crossing the southbound lanes of South Florida Avenue near the entrance to the Outback restaurant, 5255 S. Florida Ave. He was wearing a reflective vest and pushing a wheelchair but was not in the crosswalk, the sheriff’s office said.
As the man crossed the road, McCoy was allegedly driving south and appeared to be speeding, the sheriff’s office said. The Acura’s front passenger side struck the man. The man and the wheelchair flew several hundred feet after being struck by the car, the sheriff’s office said.
The man, who hasn’t been identified, died at the scene.
