A 14-year-old gang member was killed Wednesday during an exchange of gunfire with a man who suspected the teen of breaking in to his home, Lakeland police said.

This shooting occurred about 7:45 p.m. in a courtyard between duplex apartments on the 500 block of Oregon Avenue, police said.

Davion D. Smith, of 412 Aberdeen Court S., was shot several times and pronounced dead about 40 minutes later at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, police said.

Virgis Canteen, 43, of 516 Oregon Ave., was also shot several times and admitted to the hospital in unknown condition, police said.

On July 28, Canteen reported a burglary to his home and told officers he believed Smith, a documented gang member, was responsible, police said.

Canteen told detectives that on Wednesday the teen had a handgun and approached him in front of his apartment. Canteen also had a handgun, police said.

An exchange of gunfire ensued in the courtyard next to Canteen’s apartment. Canteen told police that Smith shot first, striking Canteen in the upper extremities. Canteen told police he returned fire and hit Smith several times.

A witness told detectives that two unidentified people taunted Canteen sometime before the shooting, police said.

No charges have been filed pending further investigation.
