A Citrus County homeless man was arrested after deputies said he strangled and stabbed his mother to death during an argument, then buried her in a shallow grave.

Benjamin Dick, 23, faces charges of second-degree murder and tampering with a witness.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were looking for Dick on Saturday in connection with the stabbing of his brother. When they found Dick at a homeless camp in Crystal River, several witnesses told deputies that Dick had killed his mother, 42-year-old Jennifer Brooks.

Witnesses told deputies that Dick, his girlfriend and another homeless man had been drinking with Brooks on Friday, when Dick began to argue with his girlfriend. Deputies said Dick then began to choke his girlfriend.

According to deputies, Dick attacked his mother after she made a derogatory comment about his girlfriend.

“The struggle led to an area behind a tent and into a ravine,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. “Dick strangled and also stabbed the victim several times, leading to her death.”

Dick then enlisted help from the other man, 28-year-old Shannon Parker, to bury Brooks, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies searched the area and found Brooks’ body buried near the camp, the sheriff’s office said.

Parker was arrested on charges of accessory after/before the act and tampering with a witness.

Dick’s girlfriend sustained non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said.
