A man was in critical condition Thursday night after he followed a homeowner into his home and the homeowner shot him after a confrontation, Tampa police said.

Police are still looking for a woman who is a suspect in the home invasion.

The couple entered the home, located at 1804 24th Ave., after the two victims returned home at around 8:45 p.m.

Inside the home there was a confrontation and the homeowner armed himself with a handgun and shot the male suspect, police said. The man — who police later said has a history of mental illness — and woman both ran out of the house.

Police found the male suspect not far from the home. He was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

Police didn’t release a description of the female suspect.
