Gibsonton man held in stabbing of ex-wife

A man was arrested Monday for stabbing his ex-wife several times, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

Richard Johnson, 44, of Gibsonton, is being held in a Hillsborough County jail with no bail after he was charged with attempted murder in the first degree and violation of domestic violence injunction.

On Saturday night, Richard Johnson went to the Showmen’s Club in Riverview with his girlfriend. When he entered, he saw his ex-wife, Joanne Johnson, in the club with her new boyfriend, said Debbie Carter, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman. Johnson’s girlfriend dated the man who was now dating Richard Johnson’s ex-wife.

Both men exchanged words, but there was no fight, Carter said. Joanne Johnson and her boyfriend left the club.

They returned to the home they share, at 11610 E. Bay Road, Gibsonton.

At around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Joanne Johnson’s boyfriend had gone to bed. She was awake and heard a noise outside the home.

Joanne Johnson walked outside and was attacked by her ex-husband, Richard Johnson. He stabbed her several times and fled the scene, Carter said.

She was transported to Tampa General Hospital. Her condition wasn’t known, Carter said.

Richard Johnson was located on Monday morning at 9903 Bay Drive, Gibsonton.
