Former Hernando crossing guard charged with sexual assault

A Hernando County school crossing guard has been charged with sexual assault and dismissed from his job.

James Thomas Woods, 69, of 26399 Mc Allister St., Brooksville, was arrested Sunday and charged with sexual battery, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. He was released after posting $10,000 bail.

A woman said she was assaulted between 4 and 4:30 a.m. while asleep after taking medication at Woods’ residence on Oct. 12, according to the sheriff’s office. The victim said her medication makes her physically incapacitated, but she is still aware of what is going on.

She also advised deputies that the sexual battery occurred three times on the same date, according to the sheriff’s office.

Woods has been terminated from his crossing guard position, the sheriff’s office said.
