A minor crash on a South Tampa road this afternoon turned into a fight where a driver stabbed the other driver with a knife, the Tampa Police Department said.

Driver Steven Baker, 22, of Tampa, was seriously injured in the stabbing, and was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he is in good condition, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle, Robert Suarez, 36, of Tampa, was treated at the scene for cuts to his head, wrist, legs and knees, police said.

At around 2:45 p.m., Suarez , who was driving a 2004 Audi, and Baker, who was driving a 1998 Toyota Avalon, were both heading north on MacDill Avenue just south of Bay to Bay Boulevard, police said.

Suarez was in front of Baker when the traffic came to a sudden stop, and Baker’s vehicle rear-ended Suarez’s, police said.

Both drivers pulled their vehicles into the Bay Oaks Apartments, located at 3105 Bay Oaks Court.

Suarez got out of his vehicle along with Baker and his passenger, Torrie Worthy, 23, of Tampa. A second passenger in Baker’s car, Shaquille McKever, 22, of Tampa, didn’t appear to get out of the vehicle.

The intensity of the discussion increased between the three men and turned into an argument. Worthy and Baker started to punch Suarez, police said, then Suarez pulled out a knife and stabbed Baker.

After the stabbing, Suarez rendered first aid to Baker, police said.

The case remains under investigation and charges are pending, police said.
