Ex-Bartow teacher faces charges of inappropriate conduct

Published:

A former Bartow fifth-grade charter school teacher was arrested Wednesday on charges of transmission of harmful material to a minor and lewd and lascivious behavior.

Robert Walwrath, 27, was fired from his job at Compass Charter School in April. The school had suspended him and began an investigation after receiving a complaint from a student, according to reports.

Bartow police investigated the case and a warrant was later issued for Walwrath’s arrest. He surrendered after returning from out of state, police said.

According to police, Walwrath was accused of hugging a 12-year-old student, touching her buttocks and sending her sexually explicit messages on Kik Messenger, a social media application.

Walwrath, who was in his first year at the school, said any contact was inadvertent.

He was transported to the Polk County Jail.
