A Tampa shop employee confronted and shot a man who broke into the business early Tuesday, police said.

The employee, 25-year-old Shane Hiser, was staying overnight at the Smoke Shop, 1412 W. Waters Ave., Suite 102, because of a recent burglary, police said.

About 3 a.m., 22-year-old Dillon Trujillo smashed the front window and broke into the business, police said.

A confrontation between the two resulted in Hiser shooting Trujillo, police said.

Trujillo was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Trujillo, of 4540 W. Knox St., previously had a warrant for his arrest, and additional burglary charges are pending, police said. According to state records, he served prison time from 2010 to 2012 for felony battery, aggravated assault and weapons charges.

The shooting remains under investigation.
