DUI suspect to Hernando deputy: It’s OK, I live nearby

SPRING HILL – A 37-year-old Spring Hill man was arrested early Monday morning in the area of Mayflower Road on charges of DUI.

A deputy pulled over Charles Plaia in his driveway after seeing him run a stop sign, according to a sheriff’s office arrest affidavit.

Plaia smelled strongly of alcohol and was unsteady on his feet, the report shows, and told the deputy he was coming from a bar.

The man admitted to the deputy he drank numerous alcoholic beverages throughout the night, and said “I just live around the corner. I’m not hurting anybody” and “It’s okay for me to drink and drive when I live around the corner.”

Plaia refused to perform field sobriety exercises and was arrested on charges of DUI of .15 or higher. He was being held on $500 bail.

Court records show Plaia has been convicted of DUI in the past.
